Billie Eilish Targets Global Warming Awareness in New Video for “All the Good Girls Go to Hell”

Billie Eilish has had quite a year. She debuted her first full-length album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, scored her first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Bad Guy,” and snatched three VMAs at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards (for New Artist, Push Artist, and Editing). Launching off of her newfound success, Billie used her podium to bring attention to an issue very dear to the singer: climate change.

Her latest video for “All the Good Girls Go to Hell” first shows Billie forcefully being injected with unknown substances, which cause her to sprout enormous wings. Blossoming into an angel in white, she then, in her decidedly dark style, falls from the sky at rocket speed…only to land in a pool of oil.

Struggling to re-emerge, the Rich Lee-directed clip depicts a now all-black Billie having a difficult time freeing herself from the oil spill. Meanwhile, the world around her is ablaze. Billie walks unsteadily down the street, and at one point her wings catch on fire, but she manages to fight it off. Red and black are the two predominant colors of the video, which is directly in line with the nightmarish theme of her album. Ultimately, the video is her most progressive yet, as it carries a much larger message than the fiery images tell at first glance. The sense of impending doom Billie portrays in the video is supposed to be representative of the future, should appropriate action not be taken to address and treat climate change.

Billie timed the release of this video with the upcoming UN’s 2019 Climate Action Summit, which will be held in New York on September 23. She took to Instagram to express her concerns: “Right now there are millions of people all over the world begging our leaders to pay attention.” She continued by stating, “Our earth is warming up at an unprecedented rate, icecaps are melting, our oceans are rising, our wildlife is being poisoned and our forests are burning.” She then reminded fans that on both September 20 and September 27, their voices can be heard. On those two Fridays, millions of people are expected to leave their homes, schools, and workplaces and band together as climate strikers by marching the streets and demanding an end to fossil fuels. Her send-off message was simple: “Take it to the streets. #climatestrike.”

Clearly not your average teenager, it’s terrific to see an artist of her age using her platform for good.
